Meet John Fosty · Cranston, SE Calgary
I started as someone looking for help.
After an Achilles rupture and three months of rehabilitation, I was still struggling to move my foot. My experience with MAT led me to leave an oilfield career in 2016 and pursue this work. I trained to the Rx MAT level in 2021.

Why now matters
Your body is adapting every day.
When muscles are not contributing well, the body may keep practising the compensations that allow you to continue. Waiting does not mean something serious will happen—but it can mean spending more time reinforcing a pattern that is already limiting you.
You do not have to wait until movement becomes harder or an activity you love starts slipping away. Find out what your body is doing now.
Because every assessment is one-to-one, weekly appointment availability is limited.
You are not getting younger. But you can become more capable.Healthy aging through better movementYou cannot stop the years, but you can change how you move through them. When the body shares the work more effectively, movement can feel easier, stronger, and more confident.
Keep doing more of what makes you feel alive.
The body keeps solving the problem
Compensation works—until it becomes the problem.
When a muscle cannot do its share, the body does not simply stop. It shifts load, changes timing, and builds another strategy. Over time, compensation can stack on compensation until tightness, weakness, recurring pain, or poor movement feels normal.
Recurring discomfort
The same issue returns after stretching, rest, or temporary relief.
Persistent tightness
A muscle may be working overtime because another is not contributing.
Strength without control
You can be strong and still rely on inefficient movement patterns.
Uneven movement
One side, joint, or muscle group repeatedly takes more of the load.
Who this is for
Does this sound familiar?
You do not need to understand muscle activation before starting. You only need to recognize that your current strategy is not giving you the result you want.
It keeps returning
The same tightness, weakness, or movement problem returns after temporary relief.
You have tried other approaches
You have made progress, but something still feels incomplete or the result does not hold.
You want to stay capable
You want to keep working, training, travelling, and doing what matters as you age.
Your performance has stalled
You are strong or active, but restriction, imbalance, or poor control keeps limiting progress.
A useful place to start
Your body. Your starting point.
Take about seven minutes to notice how familiar movements feel. This free 8-page booklet helps you record your observations and prepare useful questions.
- Seven gentle, optional movement observations
- A printable worksheet for your own notes
- Clear next steps, with no pass/fail score
A system. A process. A transformation.
Build the body one pattern at a time.
The process is designed to reduce compensation—not add another temporary workaround. As one pattern improves, deeper patterns may become visible. We reassess, activate, integrate, and keep building.

FAST is a progressive, one-to-one pathway combining muscle activation, stabilization and individualized neuromuscular training. Each stage builds on your assessment and response.
For selected clients, John can travel for private engagements of one week or longer. Suitability, goals and available time are discussed individually.
This is a separate, optional pathway. Regular muscle activation remains available without joining FAST.

My story · John Fosty
The experience that
changed my career.
I was strong. But I was beginning to understand how much I had learned to compensate.
- 2016
- Left an oilfield career to pursue MAT
- 2021
- Trained to the Rx MAT level
I came to Muscle Activation Techniques as someone looking for help with my own body.
After rupturing my Achilles tendon, I spent three months in rehabilitation and was still struggling to move my foot. After three MAT sessions, I experienced a return to full range of motion. That experience changed the direction of my life.
I loved the results so much that, in 2016, I left my oilfield career to pursue MAT. I continued my training and reached the Rx MAT level in 2021.
My own work did not end with my Achilles. Over the years, I have come to understand my movement as a series of compensations centred around my right foot and knee. I could be very strong while still moving in ways that tightened the right side of my back and left me feeling twisted.
I believe those patterns contributed to the strain on my Achilles before it ruptured. That is my understanding of my own experience. As I have worked through these patterns over the years, I have noticed less tightness and fewer of the lower-back issues I had struggled with.
That ongoing process is what I mean by “unwinding.” It has involved patience, revisiting earlier work, and discovering how one pattern relates to another.
These insights inform how I look at movement with my clients. I know what it is like to feel strong yet restricted, and to want to understand why the same areas keep demanding attention. Your story will be different from mine. My approach is to listen, assess, and follow how your body responds.

Public Google reviews
Real experiences, in their own words.
“After decades of poor posture and back issues due to sitting at a desk, I had tried many different things over the years to improve my back, but nothing was effective. After just the first session of MAT my back was noticeably straighter. 12 sessions later and my posture was completely changed, and it is a much more permanent change than anything else I have tried. After those sessions I went on a one month cycling trip, and didn't have any of my usual back/shoulder pain. Highly recommended!”
Ryan
“After getting hit at a crosswalk by a distracted mom I was pretty messed up with lots of soft tissue injury. Physiotherapy had moderate results. John started treating me and I went from being limited in mobility and having moderate pain to regaining my mobility and having 80 percent pain reduction in 2 months. 1 treatment from John (MAT) is equal to 8 treatments of physio/acupuncture/deep tissue. I recommend seeing an MAT practioner if you want to heal faster now!🍻👍🙏😎”
andrew Hoard
“As a physiotherapist myself I understand the importance of keeping your body performing at its best. MAT has been the most effective modality I have come across to deal with minor issues all the way to chronic pain. John really knows his stuff.”

“Only two sessions in and I am already really impressed with John and this service, as my long term, nagging muscle injuries and imbalances are starting to feel better and more aligned already.”

What to expect.
Why can I feel strong but still feel restricted?+
That question is part of John’s own story: he felt strong while still struggling with recurring tightness and restricted movement. An assessment looks at the movements that matter to you and how specific muscles contribute, rather than relying only on how much weight you can lift. Read John’s experience.
Why might we revisit a pattern we have already worked on?+
John retests as the work progresses. What he observes later may lead him back to an earlier area, and the plan changes with your response. Revisiting a pattern is part of his approach; you do not have to commit to FAST to begin with an assessment.
What happens in my first one-hour assessment?+
We discuss what you are experiencing, observe relevant movement, test how specific muscles are contributing, and use targeted activation when appropriate. Retesting helps show whether the pattern has changed.
Is this the same as massage or exercise?+
No. Muscle activation uses assessment and precise muscular input to address how the nervous system is recruiting muscles. It can complement training, rehabilitation, and other care, but it has a different purpose.
How many sessions will I need?+
That depends on your goals, history, and how many compensation layers your body has built. The initial assessment is the right place to determine a sensible next step.
Do I need to be an athlete?+
No. The work is for people who want to move, feel, or perform better—whether that means daily comfort, returning to an activity, or pursuing a high level of performance.
